Scleral Lenses

Specialty

Contacts

Specialty contact lenses are custom-designed to address unique vision needs and eye conditions that standard lenses cannot. These lenses are tailored specifically to correct refractive errors like astigmatism, myopia, and presbyopia, as well as more complex conditions such as keratoconus, severe dry eye, and post-LASIK complications. Because they are designed for your exact eye shape and prescription, specialty lenses provide both clarity and comfort where traditional lenses may not.

Examples include gas permeable lenses for sharp vision, hybrid lenses that combine a rigid center with a soft skirt for comfort, and ortho-k lenses worn overnight to reshape the cornea and allow clear daytime vision without glasses. Scleral lenses, which are larger and made from breathable gas permeable material, vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera, creating a smooth, stable surface that improves vision while also helping with dryness and irregular corneas.

How Scleral Lenses Can Help

Scleral lenses are advanced, large-diameter contact lenses crafted from highly breathable gas-permeable material. Unlike standard lenses, they are designed to vault over the cornea entirely and rest gently on the sclera, the white part of the eye. This unique design creates a smooth, uniform optical surface that significantly improves vision while also providing lasting comfort and hydration. Because they hold a reservoir of fluid between the lens and the cornea, scleral lenses not only correct vision but also keep the eyes moisturized throughout the day, making them ideal for patients with irregular or compromised corneas.

These lenses are fully customized to each patient’s eye shape and condition, ensuring a precise fit that enhances both clarity and comfort. For individuals who have struggled with traditional contact lenses or have complex vision issues, scleral lenses can be a life-changing solution.

Below are some of the conditions scleral lenses can help manage and improve:

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is an eye condition where the eye's clear front surface (the cornea) becomes thin and steepen over time. It is a progressive condition that gets worse over time. As the condition worsens, patients may experience blurred vision, double vision, and may even develop complications such as scarring or hydrops. Also, as the condition worsens, it is harder to wear glasses and soft contact lenses as the cornea becomes more irregular.

Dry eye

Dry eye is one most debilitating eye conditions that can affect the quality of life. Dry eye is usually caused by insufficient lubrication and moisture or a reduction in tear film quality. Since scleral lenses is a large-diameter contact lens that vaults over the cornea and rests on the white part of the eye (sclera), the lens is filled with a non-preservative solution, and it continuously bathes the cornea giving you comfort.

Refractive Surgery

If you’ve had RK, Lasik, PRK, and other refractive surgery forms, specialty contact lenses may be for you. If you’ve developed visual deterioration due to irregular astigmatisms, such as fluctuating vision, glare, or ghosting around images after refractive surgery and traditional glasses are not helping you, scleral lenses may be ideal for you.

Corneal Scarring

Cornea scarring from previous corneal ulcers, post-refractive surgery, or other traumatic events can lead to reduced vision. Depending on the location and the extent of the scarring, traditional eyes or soft contact lenses may not be adequate to provide the best visual outcome.
